The 52nd Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas will begin on Tuesday 31 July 2012 in La Unión.

This year’s festival is in homage to the flamenco dancer Sara Baras and features performances by Sara Baras, José Mercé, Juan Valderrama, Arcángel, Dorantes, Pastora Galván, Joaquín Grilo, Carlos Piñana and Marina Heredia, among others.

The Finals of the Cante de las Minas Competition will be held on Saturday 11 August 2012 with singers, dancers, guitarists and flamenco instrumentalists competing for the ‘Lámpara Minera, the Bordón Minero, the ‘El Desplante’ and El Filón trophies.

As well as the Competition, each year the festival gives awards to those who have contributed to flamenco in various ways. This year Castilletes de Oro have been awarded to the bullfighter José María Manzanares, the film-maker Bigas Luna, the chef José Andrés and the flamenco dancer Sara Baras.

Pencho Cros prizes are being awarded to the flamenco singer Miguel Poveda (Premio Discográfico), the journalist Juan Ramón Lucas (Premio de Periodismo), the restaurateur Lucio Blázquez (Premio a la Gastronomía), to the writer Francisco Celdrán Sánchez (Premio a las Artes Literarias) and to the painter and sculptor Esteban Bernal Aguirre (Premio a las Artes Plásticas) at the XIII Convocatoria Cultural Internacional in La Unión on 6 August 2012.
